":Do not miss Monster! This production is what all theater should be like. Campbellís innovative theatrical vision allows his actors to deliver amazing performances. While there is not a weak link in this talented cast, it must be noted that Dan Hodge is remarkably good in his subtle, intelligent, and complex performance as Victor. John Lopes is so skilled in his portrayal of the Creature that he is shockingly frightening and compassionately tender, often in the same scene. "....Itís got compassion and it chills. . . .The cast is up to the script...John Lopes makes a maverick Monster. . . .  Lopes portrays the creature with so much aplomb, you almost wish he could find a mate. ...I donít want to give away Monsterís ending but itís a good one. "Luna Theater Company strives to find its niche in Philly through "intense and provocative work", according to Producing Artistic Director Gregory Scott Campbell. Neal Bellís Monster, Lunaís season opener certainly fits the bill, but more than that, the company continues to excel at work thatís downright creepy. Well-chosen for the time of year, "Monster" is a thought-provoking Halloween treat for the grown-ups, who might enjoy some chills with their theater just now. Recipe for Human Life: Scour your local slaughter house and dissecting hall for the freshest ingredients. Take one mangled corpse, one pile of bones, one eye, one lip and one finger, the brain of a child, and several sheets of skin. Thread the nerves, insert the organs, and stitch together carefully. Let sit until weather is favorable. Electrocute for approximately 5 seconds on high and voila! Your creature is complete. Just remember!  Creating life is easy. Caring for it is a different matter.

"In the past few seasons Luna Theater Companyís annual Halloween show has rejected simple scares in favor of plays that combine a modicum of frights with plenty of food for thought. This yearís Monster is no exception....In an effectively restrained performance Lopesí creature is far from a walking corpse. After Victorís rejection the creature becomes vindictive, ruthless and terrifying; in other words human. Yet as a human being he is also painfully lonely. ...Hodgeís Victor likewise inspires a range of reactions. We detest him for rejecting his creation but we pity him as well. Hodge communicates all the contradictions in this brilliant man who is so driven and emotionally cold that at times he seems far more monstrous than the deformed, homicidal being he has created." - J Cooper Robb; Philly Weekly  (read full review)
